River Tubing & Grenadian Roads: A Memorable Adventure

We started our day with an exhilarating river tubing experience. It was a lot of fun! The water was shallow in some areas, so our guides had to push and pull us over a few patches. The surrounding flora was lush and vibrant—towering trees with thick canopies. Some trees were so massive that ant trails led to huge colonies that resembled swarms of bees.

Grenada is home to some of the most relaxed and kind people. This is a blessing, especially since the drive to the tubing location was an adventure in itself. The road spanned only 16 km, but it took over half an hour to reach our destination. It was narrow, winding, and steep—at times, we climbed to a 15% grade, reaching an elevation of 1,900 feet before beginning our descent.

The roads here remind me of back-alley lanes in Calgary: narrow, with seemingly random parking rules. However, the difference is that cars here zoom through at breakneck speeds, navigating tight corners and sharp drop-offs. Drivers are both friendly and a little reckless.

Food & Fixing: A Well-Deserved Meal

After tubing, we headed to the One Love restaurant at the boatyard for a delicious meal before returning to the boat. The food was delightful and provided the perfect energy boost after our morning adventure.

The afternoon was dedicated to cleaning and fixing the boat. I worked on taps and cupboard closures while the kids stripped the beds of linens, pillows, and coverings. Carla took on the de-mildewing project. Unfortunately, the deck shower still isn’t working. I hope some CLR will clear the tap, as it has already helped strip away rust layers from another faucet.

As I dig deeper into the boat, I realize how many small things need attention. But that’s part of the journey—any boat we bought would have come with its quirks.

We’ve only been here three days, and it already feels like both an eternity and the blink of an eye.

Yesterday’s Beach Escape: A Tropical Paradise

Yesterday, we made a quick trip to drop off some items at the boat. After that, we spent the afternoon at an incredible beach. It was the kind of tropical setting you dream about: crystal-clear water you could float in all day, soft sand, and even a perfectly bent coconut tree reaching out toward the sea.

The beach was nearly deserted, just us and a beach bar/restaurant—the Sand Bar and Grill—which turned out to be fantastic. Their house cat, appropriately named “Roti,” kept us company.

This little gem was Lance Aux Épines Beach, and it felt like the definition of paradise. The tranquility of the surroundings allowed us to unwind and soak in the beauty of Grenada.

Exploring Grenada: More Than Just Beaches

Grenada is not just about beautiful beaches and river tubing. The island is rich in culture and history. From spice plantations to historical forts, there is so much to explore.

Spice Island: The Essence of Grenada

Grenada is known as the "Spice Island" due to its production of nutmeg, cinnamon, and other spices. Visiting a spice plantation can be an enlightening experience. You can learn about the cultivation process and even sample some fresh spices.

Historical Sites: A Glimpse into the Past

The island is dotted with historical sites that tell the story of its past. Fort George and Fort Frederick offer stunning views and a glimpse into Grenada's colonial history. Exploring these sites can provide a deeper understanding of the island's heritage.

Local Cuisine: A Culinary Adventure

No visit to Grenada would be complete without indulging in the local cuisine. The flavors are a blend of African, Indian, and European influences. Try the national dish, oil down, a hearty stew made with breadfruit, coconut milk, and various meats.

Engaging with the Community: A Warm Welcome

The people of Grenada are known for their hospitality. Engaging with locals can enhance your experience. Whether it's at a market or a local event, you'll find that the warmth of the community adds to the charm of the island.

Conclusion: Embracing the Journey

As we continue our adventure in Grenada, we embrace every moment. From river tubing to beach escapes, each experience is a treasure. The beauty of this island, combined with its rich culture and warm people, makes for an unforgettable journey.

We look forward to exploring more and sharing our experiences. After all, every day here feels like a new adventure waiting to unfold.
