Fixing Boats in Paradise: A Day of Challenges and Community

Today was not a great day—probably the lowest since we’ve been here.

The Anticipation of Adventure

We woke up excited and ready for a much-needed sail with some new friends. We rushed around, getting everything ready, eager to finally get out on the water. But as soon as we left, our engines failed us… or maybe we failed them.

Déjà vu hit hard. All I could think was, please, not another Coast Guard rescue. Somehow, we found ourselves right back where we’ve been before.

The Decision to Turn Back

We made the tough call to turn back, but then our one working engine quit too. We need at least one to safely navigate the minefield of boats in Prickly Bay, so that was out. Instead, we decided to head for BBC Beach—somewhere we knew we could anchor easily. Even without the port engine to power the windlass, it’s shallow enough that we could drop the anchor manually and deal with the rest later.

The Struggle at Sea

So we sailed. I took the helm while Stephen dove into the engine bays. It turned out the port engine had a plugged fuel line (guess we didn’t completely get rid of our diesel bug). Stephen cut the line and cleverly ran fuel straight from a jerry can—brilliant.

The starboard engine, though, was overheating, with water coming out from somewhere it definitely shouldn’t. Not much to do about that mid-sail. So, we kept going. We tacked for a couple of hours, coaxing the wind to take us into BBC Beach, and at the last moment fired up the engines just long enough to drop anchor.

Emotional Toll and Reflection

By then, everyone was fried—emotionally and physically. Tensions were high, patience was thin, and maybe there were a few tears. Stephen and I didn’t talk for an hour afterward; we were just too drained.

It’s in these moments that we ask ourselves: What are we doing out here? Are we in way over our heads?

The Power of Community

But then we remember—we’re not alone. We have an incredible community of cruisers who’ve been through it all and coaches we probably need to lean on a lot more. We don’t have to do everything the hard way.

Finding Joy in the Little Things

Later, we took Maddie to the beach, stumbled upon a tiny bar, and ordered a couple of piña coladas. Watching the sunset with our boat bobbing in the background, I thought—there could be worse places to be stranded.

Tomorrow is Another Day

Tomorrow’s a new day. All we can do is keep trying our best. Someone once said that cruising is just “fixing your boat in exotic places,” and honestly, they couldn’t have been more right.

Embracing the Journey

As we navigate these waters, we learn that every challenge is an opportunity. Each setback teaches us resilience. We grow stronger with every storm we weather.

The Importance of Preparation

Preparation is key in sailing. Before setting out, ensure your boat is in top condition. Regular maintenance can prevent many issues. Familiarize yourself with your vessel's systems. Understanding how everything works can save you in a pinch.

Learning from Experience

Every sailor has stories of mishaps. These experiences shape us. They remind us that sailing is not just about the destination but the journey. Embrace the challenges; they make the good times even sweeter.

Conclusion: The Adventure Continues

In the end, it’s about the adventure. We are learning, growing, and becoming part of a community that shares our passion. We are not just fixing boats; we are building memories in paradise.

As we look forward to tomorrow, we know that every day brings new possibilities. We will face whatever comes our way, one wave at a time.

Yup, "fixing your boat in exotic places" is part of the game from what I've read! You are learning lots of sailing skills and getting a feeling how you and your vessel performs in trying conditions while at the beginning of your journey - a good thing. Wishing you happy sailing with fair winds and following seas!

The pina colada was our saving grace today, followed closely by the sunset :)
